From runway shows to music videos to street style, it’s clear that 90’s fashion is having a moment. Even better, 2018’s New York Fashion Week proved that some of our favorite hair accessories are ready to make a major comeback. Get ready to start digging through the back of your closet – designers are still managing to make the 1990s somehow feel brand new.
In case anyone needed validation that the 1990s are back in a big way, Alexander Wang proved it in his recent show at New York Fashion Week. His models walked the runway with silver statement hair claws accenting severely slicked back up-dos. While this hair accessory is immediately reminiscent of lazy hair days from long ago, Wang managed to not only breathe new life into the hair claw, he also made it feel incredibly high fashion.
Another 90s hair accessory took center stage this year at Fashion Week in the Prabal Gurung show. Gigi and Bella Hadid both walked the runway with stretchy comb headbands adorning their sleek and slicked-back hair, bring another all-but-forgotten 90s hair accessory onto our fashion radars. While these springy, plastic headbands are reminiscent of our playground days, Gurung removed their whimsy and presented them as a chic and minimalist must-have.
Michael Kors mixed florals and plaids in his Fall 2018 ready-to-wear show, but best of all, he literally topped his looks off with a bow. With it-girl models like Ashley Grahm adorned in rhinestone bow barrettes, these glitzy yet glamorous accessories were the perfect finishing touch to Kors’ rich fabrics and textures. While the barrette was a staple accessory for many 90s kids, it was one that we thought we had grown out of for good. Kors, however, proved that the barrette is ready for a comeback and give every look they’re paired with a distinctly ladylike polish.
Paired with cutting edge fashion, these amazing accent pieces prove that when nostalgia combines with creativity, the result is fashion that is fresh, exciting, but as familiar as your favorite 90’s ballad.
